Review - The Webfone

A WebFone works in a similar manner to a conventional fixed line phone. The difference is that it uses a USB port to connect to a computer and Internet to send and receive calls. Calls using WebFones are usually cheaper than standard fixed line calls, as they are Voice over Internet (VoIP) services like Skype calls.

Because of the difference between fixed line and WebFone services, I thought I would need to keep a PC or laptop connected to the phone to enable continuous service. That would have been very inconvenient.

But I found out that the WebFone worked just fine without having to connect to a PC, as it has an antenna that has a line of site to the nearest base station in my suburb and talks to it.

The WebFone was already pre-configured by the provider. So all the technician had to do was find a place in my living-room that has the best line of sight with a wireless base station and put it there.

Once the phone was connected to an electrical plug, it initialized and searched for a connection, with a light showing green once it was made.

The handset has the same functionality as a normal fixed line phone, including the speakerphone, conference calling and call logs. Another issue I was concerned about was the quality of the voice call, especially as some of the VoIP solutions sound scratchy.

The wireless Internet Company that provided me with the phone say the quality of the call is as good as the Internet connection from the base station. Unfortunately, that\'s a disadvantage when you\'re in an area that has spotty wireless coverage. The phone also doesn\'t work if there is a power cut.

But in developing countries, such as South Africa, a Webfone is a good option for residential users who are too far from the fixed line telephone systems, and for new residential developments that do not have a telephony infrastructure.

The Webfone is also appropriate for small business users who don\'t want to wait long for a phone line to be installed, and for participants at trade events, as a company can set up an office complete with telephones, faxes and Internet by just buying a box. Anyone who is far from phone lines can get connected to the phone and Internet almost instantly with these phones.
