Time management for students is becoming increasingly popular, and more and more websites and booklets are being produced to help students to organize their time better. Motivation is the key, and no one is motivated by an alarmingly long list of work related tasks.
A list on its own, of course, is of no effective use to anyone. What is also important is returning to the list at frequent intervals to check where you are, and assess whether you are running to schedule or not.
There are always going to be occasions when the best laid plans have to be shelved because of unforeseen circumstances. This, again, is where effective time management and a sound schedule becomes an increasingly valuable skill, especially when under a strict time line.
The student whose academic plans are balanced on vague judgment, guesswork and hope - will collapse too readily as soon as circumstances begin to wobble and move. However, those whose plans are well thought out, realistic, and have enough spare time to act as a safety net, will be able to quickly adapt to the change, reorder the list, and continue to make the most effective use of the time.
However - one word of warning. The most frequent mistake made by many people is to become obsessed with the process of creating and maintaining the schedule or to do list. Whether it is by hand on paper, or a clever software program, remember, the schedule is there to save you time.
Be very wary of the planning process becoming a dominant part of the overall whole. Perhaps the key should be this: plan to prepare to succeed.
