Identity Theft Fraud
You do not always have control of the places where your personal information is being held. Public records are an essential source of information and can be accessed by any identity thief. Details such as your address and telephone number can be easily found in a phone book. Systems such as reverse look up can be utilized to find out your details as well.
A history of information can be obtained through public records. An identity thief can find other information through sources such as court records, birth certificates, deaths, motor vehicle records, company information, property ownership records and more. Some countries will charge a fee for this type of information. However, other countries offer it free of charge.
There are also plenty of online services available to locate people. These services can help you and identity thief compile a collection of information that is publicly available on specific individuals. The registration of your car offers significant details related to your identity and once again, can be found through reverse look up. Acknowledging the things you read such as general news, business news, club newsletters and sports results can give an identity thief a great deal of information about you and this can be easily traced online.
Accessing information kept by institutions may be more difficult to achieve, but it is not impossible for the persistent identity thief. Credit reporting agencies, companies you interact with, educational institutions, places of employment, and clubs or organizations all leave a detailed portfolio of your life.
Private information security is implemented by the government. However, little control is utilized over applications for loans, purchase applications, medical records, utility bills and other arrangements for payment, or other routine expenditures you may have. Therefore, these are not as likely to be covered under secure acts of privacy and may unfold substantial information about your identity.
Collecting personal information appears to be part of the business curriculum for credit reporting agencies and direct marketing companies. Some identity thieves may go so far as to become subscribers to credit reporting agencies to build their personal identity information library.
In many countries, there are limitations as to what identity information may be accessible to others. Your rights allow you to know what information may be shared. Educating yourself about your rights is essential in any respect and will allow you the support of documentation if you feel your information is being misused.
